In 2011, we realised that the Primary School Education we were providing to the 50 children was not going to get them very far in terms of standing on their own feet and breaking out of the poverty trap.
We decided to take our programme further by supporting children who showed reasonable academic potential through Secondary and Higher Education/Vocational Training. We started by supporting six children from Buyonjo Primary School, entering Kaliro High School.
Kaliro High School has a capacity of approximately 2000 pupils. Most pupils are day scholars but the school also has separate boarding facilities (hostels) for girls and boys.
For the children in our care, we made sure to finance their place in the hostels provided. This ensured that the children's school attendance wouldn't suffer from being forced to take on additional responsibilities from their extended families. Furthermore, by staying in the hostel they could also benefit from the extra after-school tuition that the Kaliro High School Teachers were prepared to give them.
