At the core of Talemwa’s values are compassion, integrity, trustworthiness, financial prudence and credibility.
Long term viability
Our long term aim is to bring about lasting change. We want to lift Kaliro’s people out of poverty and dependency, and encourage them along a path to self-sufficiency, well-being and reaching their full potential.
We proceed cautiously. Much of our time is spent identifying specific needs, determining the long-term viability of individual projects and assessing whether they can be managed successfully on a sustainable basis. This groundwork forms the platform for discussions with potential donors. We do not seek to raise money that cannot be purposefully and carefully spent.
Working with the local community
We work in direct partnership with the local community. In this way, we believe we can improve the prospects of achieving long-term success; minimising the risk of projects becoming “white elephants”.
Before proceeding with any project, we actively seek agreement, participation and “buy-in” from the local community. Here’s an example. For any child to be eligible for support, we require the child’s carer to agree to contribute even a minimal amount towards that child’s education. In this small way, we encourage the carer to show commitment to the child’s welfare and encourage the child’s attendance at school.
Talemwa’s donors can be confident that their donations support projects that the local community also supports.
Integrity and financial prudence
Talemwa’s trustees give freely of their time. To date, all administrative expenses and overheads have been born by the trustees, meaning 100% of all external donations have gone directly to help the stated beneficiaries. None of our co-workers in Uganda enjoys an expat NGO lifestyle, nor do they seek one. We at Talemwa have real commitment and integrity in what we do.
